Preelection: General elections in Puerto Rico
On November 5, general elections will take place in Puerto Rico, where citizens will elect their new Governor, Resident Commissioner, Mayors, and members of the Legislative Assembly for the 2025-2029 term.
Jenniffer González, candidate of the ruling Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP), currently leads the polls with an average of 33% popular support. Juan Dalmau of the Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño (PIP) follows 7 points behind, while Jesús Manuel Ortiz from the historic Partido Popular Democrático (PPD) ranks third with 16% support. The race also includes Javier Jiménez from Proyecto Dignidad (PD) and Javier Iturregui from Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana (MVC). The candidate with the most votes will win, as no runoff election is required.
Voters in Puerto Rico will also participate in a non-binding plebiscite on the island’s political status. They will choose between retaining the current status as an Estado Libre Asociado (ELA), becoming a full U.S. state, or opting for full independence.
